9. Expanding Your Drum Set Sounds with VST

If you're feeling bored with the sounds of your e-drum set, or if you're using a budget model with less-than-stellar sounds, don't worry - you can now control external VST sounds via USB/MIDI connection with your computer. Luckily, any modern e-drum set can do this, as they all come with a USB interface.

Some drummers opt for a budget e-drum set that's designed specifically as a control kit for VST sounds, which can be a smart solution for home recording or studio use. Popular VST sounds include Toontrack's EZdrummer and Superior Drummer. While these software packages may cost as much as a cheap e-drum kit, the upgrade in sound quality is well worth it for many. In fact, high-quality VST sounds can even surpass the sound quality of high-end drum kits.

That being said, it's important to research whether your existing drum set can fully utilize the software's advantages before making the purchase. For example, a fantastic ride cymbal sound won't be of much use if your drum pad only has one trigger zone and can't reproduce choke sounds. Also, don't forget compatibility issues with hi-hat controllers that can often be tricky to tackle.

Don't worry though - our experts at Thomann are always happy to advise you on finding the perfect VST sounds for your drum set.
