WA 47jr

Not Batman, 30.01.2018
Ordered two of them and wanted to try them on acoustic instruments in a mono & stereo configuration, vocals, overheads and drum room mics.

3 changeable polar patterns and a 10db pad make this mic very versatile for many different tasks.

I've always liked the tone of a 47, just couldn't afford a real one ^_^
Slate Digital's VMS already has two models of the u47, so I was kinda keen to hear Warm Audios's FET version and didn't mind the price difference between the WA-47 vs WA-47jr either ;-)

I'm not gonna go down the comparison-rabbit-hole here though, even 2 original u47s won't sound the same, so it would be pointless. All that matters is I can hear 47 characteristics, it sounds great, it's versatile and very affordable.

The only con so far is that the grill around the capsule feels a little cheap. Anyway, for that price range it's really ok and overall well build.

The mic comes in a hard-foam filled box including mic, shock mount, 2 replacement rubber bands, normal mic mount, 2 thread adapters (surely simple but much appreciated!), a "pencil case bag" to store the mic in, manual and a WA sticker (woohoo!)

Summary: Totally happy with the mic(s), can and will recommend! WA doesn't disappoint, even on low budget products.

I am impressed!

jdstroy, 06.02.2018
Right away, I could not compare the micro against a U47FET, but I currently have a (Neumann) Gefell M71 with MV691 at home and thus ever a M7 capsule with a FET preamp, which I think could serve as a reference, because of this old ham is just great! As a monitor I used KS Digital C55 and Yamaha HS5. We have tested with language, vocals (in the musical context) and acoustics guitar. However, I have to say that our "test" did not cover off-axis or close-up talk because we were just following the "real" use case: recording vocals and instruments for our songs. Interesting here were punch-in or doubling to existing material, which we recorded with the M71. And here's the impressive thing: in the musical context (rock music) there is no difference. Same level, same "belly" and heights or presence is almost identical. If you listen to the tracks solo, it is noticeable that from about 2kHz, but really felt more than heard a Hi-Shelf, let's say + 1dB is needed to get to the M71 ran, but otherwise impressive. Our conclusion: great micro, which costs a tenth of a U47FET but really sounds great. Maybe not for professional studios and whoever wants to hear the grass grow or pick it up, probably will not be able to pick it up, but whoever does rock / punkrock production in DIY style will get what it takes!
