A bass that won't let you down

Blues, Rock & Roll, and Rockabilly bass players are known for their eyecatching stage antics - including slap-bass techniques, spinning the instrument around, and some very acrobatic shape-throwing - which can prove to be too much for upright basses that are constructed and set up in the conventional manner. Enter the Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass: This instrument features a sufficiently stable construction to allow it to stand up to the rough-and-tumble of Rock & Roll shows and comes properly set up with the right strings for the job. Equally important considering the musical application for which it is intended is that this bass features a cool matt black finish with white edges, a world away from the rather staid image of classical double basses.

Comprehensive features at a budget price

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass is constructed in the popular 3/4 size and features a laminated basswood body. A particularly noteworthy feature - and one that is anything but typical at this price point - is the ebony fingerboard, and the spike (endpin) is height-adjustable and stable enough to withstand even rough use. The machine heads are mounted on individual brass plates, and the bass comes strung with steel strings as standard, which allow it to be played with the composite bow that is included in the scope of delivery alongside a gig bag. A custom setup to provide the player's desired string action is also carried out at Thomann's stringed instrument workshop.

Cool and sturdy

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass is sure to find favour with players who are turned off by the look of "traditional" double basses, while its affordable price will particularly attract beginners from the fields of Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, and of course Rockabilly. However, more experienced bassists on the hunt for a sturdy and visually appealing second bass will find what they are looking for here as well, and its laminated construction means that it is sufficiently insensitive to moisture and temperature changes to allow it to be played in the pedestrian precinct or the park.

About Thomann string instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann string instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

Built to play

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass has a look that will make players want to get out and perform right away, and it will be at home wherever looking great is as important as sounding great - whether it's on stage, in the street, or in the park. As mentioned above, its laminated construction makes this bass particularly resistant to wind, moisture, and sun (not to mention high-heeled shoes). Of course, the Rockabilly Bass is also an excellent choice for players just starting out on the instrument, and these players should be sure to request a low string action when ordering the bass to make those first notes as easy to play as possible. Needless to say, finding a good teacher will also be extremely helpful!

I actually like it...

I was very satisfied about the way thomman sorted out the shipping of this bass to the UK. This is my first double bass witch i purchased to learn basics and slapping. The bass its self is beautyfull. I always say, an instrument should catch your attention with its appearance, should attract you to wish playing 'em more, inspire you to just go further and learn, achive and succeed. This instrument's been me best playmate in the past couple months, and I feel the progress. I think remarkable progress can't be achived with a poorly built instrument. The bass ain't solid, but the music I'm into doesn't require such a full tone that a solid body bass might provide. It comes with pretty high tension steel (or whatsoever) string witch gonna rip your fingers off, but in fact, will train them. The machine heads are little instable, but what to expect?.... these are all them features easily could be changed by the user. The real value is in the body its self, and the price.... Great bass to start... as a starter the 2k bass will sound rubbish within your hands too. When you're a pro, the cheapest bass will do as well. The main thing's the technique innit?

M
Beginner bass.

This is not the kind of bass you use for bowing solos in front of a philharmonic orchestra, but that was never the purpose of this bass.
I started out with one of these and it held up for several years of rockabilly abuse without letting me down. I trashed it around on stage, stood on it, pimped it with stickers and paint, had it scratced and played it outdoors. Lots of fun!
It has a weaker sound than more expensive basses, sure, and the tonal quality isn't that exciting either. But for a beginner, this is something to get you started, just make sure it is properly adjusted (go for the "Jazz" setup, unless you're strong as the incredible hulk) and if you feel the need for something more expensive after a couple of years, you can still keep this one for experiments or combat gigs out in the street!

nice one

I just started learning to play this beautiful instrument, and after couple weeks, my love for it grew. I play mostly at home, but sometimes I bring it with me for a trip, playing rehearsals etc. The sound, for a plywood, is rich and woody. All parts work correctly, and in the package is everything you need for you to start your journey with double bass.
Strongly recommended for beginners, the price will not kill you, and the quality is there for sure. The customer service is also worth mentioning, quick, helpful and professional
