An Improved HD681
IanC 15.05.2013
I have the HD681 as well as the HD681b. The Evo is imo, the best vesrion of the HD681.

The bass is on about the same level as the HD681 but the treble seems more refined and less edgy.

The sound itself is wrapped on top of a big hearted bass. The bottom end is ramped up, very similar to the HD681 of old. However, the treble is less edgy so the headphone seems warmer and more bass focused. However, there is also a peak in the treble giving the top end a nice 'bite.'

The comfort is ok. I would suggest changing the pads for velour pads. A little more comfortable and less 'hot' for the ears.

I'm not keen on the shiny plastic finish on the sides. They are fingerprint magnets and I will be using a fine wet and dry cloth to rub this finish down to a matt look.

It comes with two cables that are easily attached to the headphone. One is nice and short for using with portable equipment and another to lengthen the lead.

For this kind of money, the HD681 evo is an absolute bargain if you like a bass led sound with good clarity and reasonable sensitivity for portables. It works exceedingly well with an amp and the bass is perhaps a tad more controlled.

Worth every penny.

Compelling saving

I consider this a surprisingly good product, not only for the price.

I like:
- Sound. I liked them immediately: it's a rich sound that entertained me out of the box;
- Comfort. The elastic headband makes easy to find the correct position. The standard ear pads are very big and don't apply pressure to my ears; in the box there are also a pair of velour ear pads;
- Detachable cable; two of them, of different lengths, are supplied.

I don't like:
- They don?t seem robust as other headphones I have, but time will say.

Other products I know about:
- If you need foldable headphones for an on the go setup, consider the HD-685: they are much easier to carry and sound more neutral;
- If you like the HD-681 Evo engaging sound but you need more isolation from outside noise, consider the HD-662 Evo;
- If you like a "warmer" sound with more isolation from outside noise, or if you need higher impedance, consider the HD-660.

A
Superlux HD-681 EVO excellent !
Anonymous 30.12.2014
The headphones are very comfortable, have a soft and comfortable ear-pads.

Additional comfort is provided velours pads.
Can be used for hours without problems.

Bass area is predominantly a bit. Powerful bass range is good and fun to blast and various film effects.
It is recommended to remove the sponge, which is located between pads and speaker headset, so the sound becomes brighter, and quality bass area is improving.

Medium tones are excellent, treble is slightly dominant, but OK.

If you like powerful, voluminous, fast and accurate bass area, as well as excellent and clean middle range of tones and brilliant treble that allow for hours of relaxed enjoyment in music, then Superlux HD-681 EVO excellent choice, without competition in a similar price range.

You can't go wrong for the price.

This is a really well-rounded kit. Additional velcro and cables - all nice touches. The sound is clear, sound isolation is also fine considering it is only a semi-closed design.

You might struggle a bit if you have a big head like I do; in that case just replace the leather earpads with the included velour ones - they are quite more comfortable at least during the first 30 minutes.

All in all the overall build quality is more than fine, considering the cost.

If there is one thing I would change, it's that 3.5mm jack that is hanging out from the left side and feels like it's going to be the first thing to break.

Incredible bang for the buck
Matt001 23.03.2018
The Superlux HD-681 was the first over the ear headphone that I bought for music production. I read a lot of positive reviews and decided to give it a try. I wanted a budget headphone quite neutral (allowing to mix at late night) but with a good bass response, since I mainly produce electronic music. I now also have more expensive headphones from Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic. A direct comparison would not make sense, since the price does vary, but they provide me with some references to write the review. Summing up:
+ very good comfort, actually it is the more comfortable headphone that I have (for my head shape)
+ Nice sound. Thanks to the 50mm driver and its eq shape, bass sounds very full and it makes fun to listen music with them.
On the other hand I would not really recommend to mix on these (but I generally would not recommend to mix on headphones if possible), but for "sketching" or creating a beat they will get the work done, and you can fix the mix later on monitors
+ you get 2 cables, adapter 3.5 to 6.3mm, and a bag! The shorter cable is really practical if you work with a USB audio interface that is close to you
+ they work also with low power output (a mobile phone, just crank the volume up). With a proper amp (or with a standard sound card) of course they sound better
- nothing for the price. Maybe, if you care the look... They are very "studio" (AKG look) and probably they look funny if you plan to use them in the subway. They are however not designed for that (they are semi open).

I would definitely recommend them. In their price range they are difficult to beat.

Well worth the price!
Diablo 20.01.2020
I needed a pair of headphones to take away from home, where I use a pair of Akg K240 MKII with satisfaction.
These Superlux for the price they cost sound all too well.
They have slightly more extended bass than the HD 668 and deliver a satisfying audio reproduction that caters well to instruments and vocals.
They have a relatively flat mid-range but tend to sound slightly sharp because of the bump in the high-mid/low-treble, especially with tracks that are already a little bright.
Unfortunately they don't block a lot of ambient noise, they're not portable and do not have the most durable build quality, but still they're good for my needs and carried and used with care and attention they can give many satisfactions.

Superlux HD 681 EVO BK
Kikkachu 09.06.2019
For the price I paid, it's excellent. It came with another cord and replacements earpads. I needed two days to get used to it, as it is large and a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. Hopefully, the plastic holds for a decade.

Incredible value for money
dharma one 12.12.2017
Compared to Sennheiser HD600 or ATH-R70X there is a little bit less detail, but not massively so. Considering it's 20x cheaper, it's amazing. I would be happy to use this instead of either. The subbass extension is very good, as is stereo imaging, and it's relatively flat in terms of frequency response.

A
Amazing sound quality for cheap
Anonymous 21.06.2014
These headphones have insanely good sound quality for such a cheap pair. Being semi-open they have a nice balance of wide soundstage and deep, punchy bass. They also isolate you from outside noise rather well, but they do leak a bit of sound.

The build quality is decent. It looks and feels like cheap plastic, but should be sturdy enough for anyone who takes care of their equipment. Besides, at this price range it's not too big of a loss if they do break.

The accessory list is pretty impressive. The headphones come with a bag for the accessories, two removable cables (1.5m and 3m) and a pair of velour earpads, which are much more comfortable than the default pleather ones.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied by these headphones. You can not get anything better at this price!
