4. Arranging

Another legacy of the MIDI sequencer is the ‘Arrange’ window, also known as the ‘Project’ or ‘Session’ window. The Arrange window shows an overview of MIDI and audio tracks (of which more below) and allows you to rearrange their positions in time, as well as cutting up tracks into blocks, copying and pasting them, and moving them about. For instance, you could slice off the start of your chorus and put it somewhere else in the song, copy a guitar riff from the intro and slap it into the ending, or duplicate a vocal track in order to process each one with different effects. A recent addition to the Arrange window is the ability to view and edit mixing and effects automation data directly on the track – you could create a volume envelope for an audio track, or draw in a fade or a panning sweep. Effects can be automated in the same way, allowing you for instance to draw in reverb depth changes so that they occur at exactly the right moment.
