Nice piece of gear
Marco4192 12.05.2014
I have been using the MOTU 8 PRE for some recordings, as audio interface for my computer. It was very stable thanks to the good MOTU drivers and the overall quality of the gear was good. The plus points were the easy setup, the very easy installation of the software and the solid build of the chassis. On top of that the quality of the converter is good as well. The minus points are the preamps, in my opinion you can get much better ones by looking around, but for the price it's a very good unit and for sure it can make very nice recordings.
One other good thing is the possibility of expanding it digitally with the ADAT toslink ports, I think it's the only one unit at that price which offers 2 inputs to work at 8ch @ 96kHz (SMUX)

Great Value with very pleasant sound
Anonymous 11.09.2015
I bought one of these for a location recording rig.

We connect it to our MOTU 828 via ADAT and all syncs very easily.

The sound quality is very high and reminds me of other MOTU gear in that it has a nice warm but still detailed sound. There is warmth and clarity without the harshness that I have heard in some other cheaper preamps/converters.

Comparing this with the RME Octamic we use in our studio, the Motu stands up extremely well and I would have not problem using this place of the excellent Octacmic.

The build quality is very good, the only weak point being the gain knobs are not as robust as the RME.

Edited - DIED AFTER SIX MONTHS
yulito 24.11.2020
My Motu died after 6 months in the studio. Apparently there is a recurring issue on the unit related to humidity eating up the volume know circuits, which are also connected to the internal engine of the sound card. I didn't even bother sending it back (6 months wait). I got in emergency a Scarlet 18i20 and to my surprise I haven't felt the need to upgrade! The price doesn't always reflect the value!

Motu 8 Pre USB excellent interface for home studio
Mark7232 19.10.2021
I was looking for an interface for my home studio and chose the Motu 8 pre mainly for the amount of in and outs and the sound quality. The USB is super quick and no different in performance than my old Focusrite FireWire unit. I’m very happy to recommend this interface for quality and ease of use. The software that comes with it needs a little time getting used to but half hour working through it and your good to go.
