GSi Gemini Rack

This is an interesting device and I don't think there is another like it on the market. The goal of this item is to give keyboard players all of the primary sounds they might need on a gig or in the studio. Therefore the focus is on classic keyboards, organs, old school synth tones, melotron, 80's and 90's digital keyboards, etc. There's a smattering of orchestral sounds, a vibraphone and some other extras but the focus is on classic sounds. The modeled rhodes, wurli, clavinet, B3 and other organs are fantastic, they really do feel organic and real. The modeled CP electric grand, while not totally realistic, also sounds very cool. The newest acoustic pianos are a huge improvement on the old original ones. The virtual analog synth can sound very analog with good programming, though it has its limitations. The various sampled sounds vary in quality from very nice to very pointless. The downsides: Most importantly I have found several bugs which I emailed the developer about. He has not even acknowledged them. Before I bought the unit he was very responsive to questions; now there are problems and he is nowhere to be found. Secondly, it's not possible to import user samples; the developer told me that no other keyboard does this correctly so he decided not to add the feature in. This is of course purely false. Lastly the synth has some limitations; and filter keytracking does not behave properly. There are only 4 slots in the mod matrix which is fine except if you wish to use aftertouch to control vibrato, this takes up 3 slots! 2 for the pitch of the oscillators 1 and 2 (there is no global option,) and one to direct aftertouch to the LFO. I would think of the synth as a way to get basic sounds relatively quickly, not as a deeper more expressive power synth. In short, if you are needing mostly keyboard sounds this really cannot be beat in its flexibility. If you need a wider variety of sounds you may wish to add more sound sources or get a more expensive product.

Die E-Piano-Modelle (Rhodes, Wurli, Clavinet...) und die Tonewheel-Orgel auf Basis der VB3-II sind hervorragend. Für diese Klänge habe ich das GSI Gemini gekauft und bin damit äußerst glücklich. Klasse!

Die Transistororgeln und die ausgewählten Mellotron-Sounds gefallen mir ebenfalls. Die modellierte Pipe Organ klingt auch prima, aber sie ist etwas weniger variabel, als erhofft.

Die Electric-Grand-Simulation ist auch nicht schlecht. Vorhanden ist außerdem eine ganz gute Sample-Erweiterung eines Electric Grand Yamaha CP70. Trotzdem bevorzuge ich gegenüber diesen beiden GSI-Varianten in vielen Situationen das "Stage Grand" des Roland SRX-07-Boards, welches sich auch im Roland Integra findet und derzeit sogar der Grund für mich ist, das Integra zu behalten. Die vielen anderen E-Pianos des Integra sind inzwischen ein wenig in die Jahre gekommen und können meiner Meinung nach nicht mit dem GSI Gemini mithalten.

Einige der gesampelten akustischen Pianos sind gut nutzbar, aber nicht großartig. Das Decay ist mir beispielsweise zu kurz, was sich aber auch nicht ändern lässt, da ein Parameter dafür fehlt. Auch die Dynamik hat Potential nach oben. Für akustische Pianos bevorzuge ich das dafür sehr gute Dexibell SX8.

Daneben gibt es den VA-Synthesizer und eine Reihe weiterer Sounds, die mich aber weniger interessieren.

Die 11 zu einer festen Kette verschalteten Effekte haben auch eine sehr gute Qualität, selbst die sonst oft problematischen, wie zum Beispiel der Amp Simulator. Sie sind oft wichtiger Bestandteil von Presets. Daher ist es wirklich sinnvoll, sie im Gerät zu haben und auch zu nutzen.

Die neue, hier rezensierte Rackversion des GSI Gemini (mit dem rotem Display) hat ein internes Netzteil, klasse! Vorsicht, beim Desktop-Modell ist das nicht so. Am Gerät selbst kann man nur die Presets wechseln. Das Gerät lässt sich aber per USB-Kabel am USB-B-Anschluss über ein Windows-Tablett mit dem von GSI entwickelten Editor gut und stabil bedienen und editieren. Auch von GSI angebotene Sample-Sets lassen sich so nachladen. Den MacOS-Editor und das Editieren per Browser über WLAN habe ich nicht getestet. Ich vermisse lediglich eine Möglichkeit, den Kontrast des Displays einzustellen, aber damit kann man leben.

Fazit: Beste E-Pianos, Tonewheel-Orgel und vieles mehr! Aus meiner SIcht gibt es keinen anderen Sound-Expander, der in diesen Soundkategorien diese Qualität bietet.
