Sibelius first

By far the most affordable sibelius package. This small package (should fit through letter box) contains an updated version of sibelius. The programme is laid out slightly differently than sibelius 6. Take five minutes to get used to the lay out, its actually more intuitive than previous versions. Same keyboard commands apply. Inputting notes still feels the same. You can input notes using a midi keyboard (although if the music is complex you might be better off inputting manually using the mouse as correcting the rhythm can take longer). I still await a program that transcibes what I play on my midi keyboard as i want it to look. Lowering the tempo and adjusting minimum note length can help accuracy when inputting notes using midi. The sound during playback is great. Be aware however that you will require 12GB of hard disk space for sibelius first and its sounds, if your computer is short on space sibelius first will work fine without the extra sounds and only takes 500mb of space. Having access to the internet on your computer will be useful for activating and registering the program. Can be used on up to two computers for personal use. Also make sure you've been installing your windows updates, (this program works on Mac also, i dont have a mac though) works on windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2 with the platform update pack (i had to download this, wouldnt open without it), and later windows versions. The Sibelius first package also comes with photoscore lite for scanning music and editing it, audioscore lite for transcibing music played through a microphone/ audio cd, and sibelius scorch for viewing sibelius directly in browser. In conclusion, its a value for money package, comes with everything you'd want to write down your music (unless your writing for big brass bands or large orchestras). Save and print off your own music, priceless.

Entry version of Sibelius - still very capable

I've been using the Sibelius full version for a while as an amateur musician, and - after a few weeks of learning the interface - I got to like this software very much. For my new laptop I purchased the less expensive First! edition, after downloading and trying the trial version. My main concern was if the First! edition had all the functions that I used in the full version.

For me it worked out fully, after a few weeks of using the First! edition I don't miss anything from the full version. I'm not notating symphonies just jazz and popular songs for 4-5 instruments.

The reason I'm using notation software is the many helpful possibilities for learners: easy to change key, print a sheet in new key, or use the iPad with the Avid Scorch (free) software as electronic sheet - which is also able to show the notes and chords on piano keyboard or guitar neck (as well as the windows software). For starters, even the note names can automatically be written in the note heads - which is not readable on a paper print, but very well readable on the iPad (even without zooming in).

I digitized many of my paper scores or pdf scores with the help of Photoscore, that is included in the full suite but only comes with limited functionality with Sibelius First!. However, even with Photoscore Light that comes with it, one can scan and digitize not too complex scores which can later be enhanced in Sibelius First!. It is much less hassle than enter the song from scratch.
You can then bring hundreds of scores with you on an iPad to the rehearsal, and if you're uncertain how the song should sound, you can have the sotfware play it for you.
The staves/instruments can be separated while printing or playing back the score.

All in all, it's a great help for learners (and everyone is a learner :)) and is worth the price in my opinion.

I cannot compare Sibelius to its competitors because this is the only notation software I ever used - and will remain most probably, as I like it.
